Infinidat Green IT: Super Savings & Sustainability

Over the last year we’ve hosted four global webinars on our Green IT solutions. Based on the turnout of 200+ attendees at each webinar, there’s little doubt that this is a hot topic among data center and IT professionals. Our commitment to Green IT is validated by our storage solutions that enable significant cost savings and environmental benefits for our enterprise customers. As an efficient storage provider, we demonstrate how our technology reduces energy consumption, carbon emissions, data center footprint, and costs, while improving performance, availability, and scalability.
So, let me summarize the three key areas where Infinidat provides Green IT and share a number of FAQs that have come up on the webinars!
- Energy Consumption Reduction: Infinidat's Green IT approach focuses on reducing energy consumption and lowering carbon emissions. InfiniBox® uses the latest in power-efficient technologies and techniques to design-in sustainable storage systems. Our powerful InfiniVerse® telemetry tools generate a vast amount of actual power consumption data available not only for our customer’s use, but that we also use in our design process. Lastly, we now let customers access this information for their own green initiatives by providing widgets to display historical power consumption and CO2 emission data for every InfiniBox in a customer’s data storage estate. Now they can know their power usage and carbon footprint.
- Improved Hardware Design and Technology: Infinidat has made several hardware upgrades focused on sustainability. For instance, in October 2022, we announced an upgrade to InfiniBox that provided 72% more capacity in the same footprint and a 42% reduction in power per effective PB. Our September 2023 upgrade to InfiniBox™ SSA doubled the capacity in the same data center footprint and reduced power consumption by 50% per effective TB. In May 2024, we evolved our sustainability-by-design philosophy with a new generation of systems – G4. With 20% more power-efficiency per Controller CPU core and up to 2.5x better performance than the 3rd generation. These upgrades demonstrate our commitment to evolving sustainability. Our focus on power efficiency will continue to guide our future design principles.
- Consolidation and Reduction of Physical Footprint: Infinidat has the power to consolidate multiple storage arrays into fewer, more efficient InfiniBox systems. We have a history of consolidating other vendors' arrays into Infinidat power-efficient arrays. For example, a Fortune 200 Financial Services company replaced over 100 competitor arrays with 38 InfiniBoxes and 6 InfiniBox SSAs. In another example, a Fortune 500 Food Distributor replaced 21 competitor arrays with 4 InfiniBoxes. And a Fortune 500 company consolidated 288 floor tiles of a competitor’s all-flash arrays to only 61 floor tiles of the InfiniBox SSA all-flash solution. Consolidation reduces the number of racks, floor tiles, and overall power and cooling costs. This results in a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and reduced environmental impact of your IT infrastructure.
Green IT with Infinidat: FAQ
A number of questions came up during the webinars that I thought would be useful in the form of FAQs.
1. What is Green IT and why is it important?
Green IT refers to practices and technologies that target reducing the environmental impact of IT operations. This includes minimizing energy consumption, lowering carbon emissions, and promoting sustainable disposal of technology products.
Green IT is crucial because the environmental impact of data centers and IT infrastructure is huge and growing rapidly, especially with the onslaught of AI applications. By adopting Green IT practices, enterprises can contribute to a more sustainable future and reduce operational costs (OpEx).
2. How does Infinidat contribute to Green IT initiatives?
Infinidat designs its storage arrays with sustainability in mind. The important features of achieving this include:
- Power-efficient technologies: InfiniBox leverages the latest advancements in power-efficient hardware and software to minimize energy consumption.
- Telemetry-based optimization: InfiniVerse, Infinidat's powerful telemetry tool, provides real-time power consumption data, for continuous monitoring and optimization.
- Consolidation capabilities: Infinidat's solutions enable the consolidation of multiple storage arrays into a single, more efficient InfiniBox platform, reducing power, cooling, and floor space requirements.
3. What specific actions are Infinidat taking to minimize its environmental footprint?
Infinidat is committed to decarbonization across its operations. Our key initiatives include:
- Integrating ESG Reporting: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles are incorporated into every part of Infinidat's operations, from supply chain management to technology development.
- Reducing Scope 3 Emissions: Infinidat has achieved a 41% reduction in total carbon footprint across its value chain, encompassing Scope 3 emissions.
- Developing Power-Efficient Products: Infinidat continuously upgrades its product line to deliver higher performance with lower energy consumption.
4. How do Infinidat storage solutions compare to competitors in terms of energy efficiency?
InfiniBox is demonstrably more energy-efficient than competitors. Analysis shows that Infinidat arrays deliver 2.5 to 4.5 times better power efficiency (watts/TB) compared to leading enterprise-class storage competitors.
Here's a chart of publicly available power and capacity information for one of our leading enterprise competitors – Dell/EMC. To take it a step further: if you're using PowerMax and are worried about energy efficiency or greenhouse gas emissions, consider replacing it with a modern InfiniBox G4 solution. We’ve also provided a calculator to help you estimate the savings in both OpEx and carbon footprint!

5. What are the tangible benefits of using Infinidat storage solutions for Green IT?
Infinidat customers experience significant benefits from reduced energy consumption:
- Lower OpEx: Reduced power consumption translates directly into lower operational expenses.
- Reduced Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions: Minimizing energy use contributes to a lower carbon footprint, supporting your green IT sustainability goals.
- Improved ROI/TCO: The combination of lower OpEx and increased efficiency results in a better return on investment and lower total cost of ownership.
6. Can you provide a real-world example of how Infinidat has helped customers achieve Green IT goals?
One Fortune 200 Financial Services company replaced over 100 competitor arrays with 38 InfiniBoxes and 6 InfiniBox SSAs, resulting in:
- 69% reduction in data center floor space
- 22% reduction in total power consumption
This demonstrates the significant impact Infinidat solutions can have on reducing environmental impact and improving efficiency.
